Hold Up Art presents TRASH, a group exhibition featuring the work of nine emerging artists whose work impressed exhibiting artist and guest curator Matthew Hodges. With an emphasis on art on repurposed and found materials, TRASH is as much above the environment as it is about the free-to-own vibe of contemporary street art.

“Every trash day, there is a coffee table, a chair, a couple doors left out for the picking,” says Matthew Hodges. “Why spend money on new canvas and panels when you can reclaim a surface for free? Canvas, whether it’s the cheaper kind from China or the more expensive surface from Belgium, and wood panels are expensive, and not very environmentally friendly. We wanted to bring attention to repurposed materials as an alternative substrate source to the more traditional art surfaces. It is an economic and eco-friendly solution to the contemporary predicament with which artists are dealing.”

Matthew chose his eight compatriots for TRASH, Craig Skibs Barker, Kelly Castillo, Alex Chiu, Cody Lusby, Noel Paris, Ryan Pratt, Kilby Rodell and Danny Schutt, with an interest in showing diversity in how artists are using repurposed materials, and based on his belief that these artists deserved more attention from mainstream collectors. Dedicated to showcasing the talents of up-and-coming artists whose work in the streets of Los Angeles is often overlooked, Hold Up Art was the ideal setting for a show such as TRASH.

“Hold Up Art deals with contemporary art. The artists in the show are creating art in the style and with materials that directly relate to our time,” continues Matthew. “I would say that we found the perfect home for this group exhibition.”
